Driver of the Year 2003
"It has been almost four years since Steve Springer joined the staff of the Transport Board, to be precise August 18th 2000 as a bus Driver (Operator) and to-date many other employees do not know this gentleman who though small in statue has a big heart for his job at the Board. On a daily basis Steve leaves his home and journeys to the Princess Alice Terminal, where he is currently assigned to the Warrens/Jackson route, to transport commuters as he plays his part in making the Board the principal provider of a safe, efficient and reliable mass transit service, while delivering the highest level of customer satisfaction to users of public transport in Barbados.
The holder of a heavy-duty license, Mr. Springer drove a truck and also did freighting before joining the Transport Board. Steve smiles as he reminisce about seeing the Transport Board’s employees going about their daily work schedule and deciding that the organisation would be the ideal place to work as it appeared to be a disciplined and organized workplace. His perseverance is trying to join the ranks of the Board’s employees was just one of the traits that today allows him to be the Driver of the Year 2003.
The hallmarks of being an ideal employee as highlighted by Mr. Springer are punctuality, regular attendance, deportment and doing the job to the best of your ability. In addition, being there when needed, going the extra mile and full cooperation with the Supervisors adds to a rewarding days work. He reminds his colleagues that in addition to the Driver Recognition Programme which is a joint programme between the Board and its insurance partners of which the Driver of the Year is just one part, the Board also provides a medical unit which is there to ensure that employees are educated in how to operate in an environment that can be medically stressful and physically draining and that visiting this unit is one of the reasons that he has been able to remain healthy to reach this pinnacle as Driver of the Year.
Steve says that his philosophy at the Board is “take one day at a time, know what you have to do and do it”. He insists that this philosophy is also borne out by the various programmes in place at the Board which includes defensive driving and retraining when necessary by driver trainers. Mr. Springer concludes that these programmes are what helps to keep him focused so that at the end of his shift he is satisfied that he gave of his best and took his passengers to their destinations safely and has resulted in his accident free record.
Mr. Springer leaves these word of wisdom with his fellow workers “always put 100% into your job, and give of your best in what ever job you are called upon to do and you too can become Driver of the Year”.
