GERIATRIC HOSPITAL SUNDAY SCENIC TOUR
27th June 2006
The Transport Board provided an unforgettable day for patients at the Geriatric Hospital on June 11th of this year. Patients were treated to a Sunday Scenic Tour with the compliments of the Transport Board to the East Coast Road, Cherry Tree Hill and River Bay. Buses left Independence Square, Bridgetown at about 02:15 p.m. under heavy showers and overcast skies. The journey to the East Coast Road took us through Halls Road, Harmony Hall, Waterford, Hothersal Turning, Lower Estate, St. Helens, Locus Hall, Market Hill, Groves Corner, Andrew’s, Blackman’s Corner, Bon Well, Horse Hill, Joe’s River, Cattlewash, Barclay’s Bark and on to the East Coast Road. The East Coast Road stop lasted approximately thirty (30) minutes but unlike Bridgetown, bright and beautiful sunshine prevailed on the East Coast Road. The patients from the Geriatric Hospital took that opportunity to enjoy the scenic view of the East Coast Road which many of them had not seen for numerous years and enjoyed the sandwiches prepared for them by the organization. One patient was asked if she was having a good time out and her response was “a wonderful time… when will you be taking us out again.” The question could only be answered as “soon” with a smile.
After enjoying thirty (30) minutes at the East Coast Road, it was off to Cherry Tree Hill. Leaving the East Coast Road we passed through Shorey Village, Morgan Lewis and saw the famous Morgan Lewis Mill, one of the only two working mills still left in the Caribbean, and on to Cherry Tree Hill. The Cherry Tree Hill stop lasted for fifteen (15) minutes and persons on the bus sat and enjoyed the view of the surrounding Scotland District while enjoying a light lunch. Then it was off to the final stop - River Bay in St. Lucy. On the road to River Bay, the tour left Cherry Tree Hill and passed through Boscobell, Pie Corner, Spring Hall and on to River Bay. When we arrived at River Bay it was quite busy with other buses sharing the location. While at River Bay a few patients took the opportunity to go for a short walk down to the beach and back to the parked bus. The evening came to a conclusion with a beautiful sunset, one that patients would remember for a long time. Mrs. Augustin, the Principal Nursing Officer (Ag.) and other patients were asked about their experience on the Tour and the responses by all parties were “the tour was an excellent experience for us, keep up the good work”.
