The Opportunity
The Transport Board invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Chief Engineer. The individual must he highly knowledgeable in the field of automotive engineering, innovative, dynamic and a great team player willing to build a climate of excellence in a changing Transport Board. He/she is required to develop strategies and plans and directs the activities of the Quality Assurance Department, the Operations Department and the Maintenance Section in order to achieve the Board’s objectives.
The successful applicant will be on contract initially for a period of three years.
Responsibilities
The prospective Chief Engineer’s main responsibilities will include:
- Develops strategies, plans, policies, systems and procedures for the provision of a mechanically sound, consistently reliable, readily available, high performance and safe bus fleet.
- Directs, monitors, and controls the activities related to the ordering of parts, the repair, preventative maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, as well as equipment, compounds and buildings.
- Analyzes engineering defects on vehicles and conducts and/or supervises research and trouble-shooting activities.
- Establishes, promotes and directs procedures and methods to ensure that quality operational & mechanical standards are met and maintained.
- Monitors the management of Operations Department’s personnel as well as scheduling and dispatching activities so as to affect and maintain high quality, reliable and convenient public transportation service.
- Organizes, monitors and controls vehicle security arrangements, vehicle cleaning operations and general facilities and maintenance activities.
- Ensures that vehicles are road worthy and safeguards the Board’s automotive and mechanical assets.
- Conducts performance appraisals/evaluations.
- Participates in and recommends the hiring, transfer, promotion and discipline of subordinate personnel.
- Ensures that the adequate numbers of buses required to efficiently provide routes services are available.
Qualification and Experience
- University Degree or advanced qualification in automotive and/or mechanical engineering.
- A minimum of seven years, technical and managerial experience in a repair/maintenance environment, preferably at a bus or trucking company.
- Good diagnostic and analytic skills.
- Good motivational, leadership, coaching, administrative and interpersonal abilities and skills.
- High computer literacy.
- Knowledge of passenger transport management would be desirable.
Remuneration
Remuneration will be in accordance with the Board’s pay structure and policy.
